“We are full full full of bad examples of bad dissemination... [many scientific topics] could be explained in simple words, conveyed in the substance of things rather than in the parascientific nomenclature - and this defect of vulgarization is a kind of cultivation of anti-culture diffused in this country. Vulgarization is sometimes more an expression of the writer's desire to show how clever he is, rather than to raise the knowledge level of the listener .... We must realize that the spread of knowledge to non-clerics is a duty of the civil society, a true form of real democracy that requires suitable language, suitable controls and great balance.”

Luigi Donato, at the "Accademia della Crusca", April 12th, 2006

The IFC Communication Office aims to an innovative approach to  "Communication in Science": an intervention unraveled into two dimensions, within the scientific community and towards the outside, as two sides of the same coin, [...] it does not intend to replace or to overlap the scientific journalist (either an informer or a media relations staff member), but rather [...]it considers the institutional communication of a Research Organization as the synergic integration of its two, internal and external, faces. Any member of the scientific community (including those supporting research) must take the reins of the communication initiative, without intermediaries, with the awareness of being ethically responsible about the communicated message, and the relative approach policy, according to the target audience. In other words, the Research Organization must be considered a certified data source, so that the external public aiming to "the clear water", can approach "the source" with confidence. [...] The Comunication Office trusts into a person, professionally involved in Science, educated to aspects, typical of the communicator: translator and simplifier, combiner and experimenter of more direct languages, mediator between different knowledge and experiences, creator of imaginaries (also emotional and ethical) and entertainer. In this way, he will be able to meet the various requirements, actively responding to the real risk of incommunicability, both within its own infrastructure (which, for IFC, is heterogeneous and multidisciplinary), and externally, through a coherent communication of an intact and properly functioning organization.
